How can children study sound — something they can't see or touch? Students will better understand this challenging topic through a series of inquiry-based activities designed to teach the characteristics of sound, variables that affect it, and how sound is transmitted and received. Instruction culminates with students making model eardrums, then planning and constructing their own musical instruments.

Part of the Science and Technology for Children® curriculum, this unit is aligned with the National Science Education Standards and offers complete hands-on instruction.
