Professional Development:
The Key to a Quality Science Learning Experience

There is no doubt that teachers are central to the success of Beckman@Science. That is why training for teachers and other school district personnel is a critical component of the initiative. Orange County elementary teachers were offered free training on specific Beckman Discovery Box units at one and two-day workshop. These trainings taught teachers how to use hands-on science material and equipment in their classrooms, provided them with the reasoning behind the hands-on-science curriculum, and tools needed to effectively assess student progress. Upon completion of training, teachers borrowed the kits free of charge for up to 8 weeks from the Beckman Science Materials Center. Beckman@Science trained teachers on the use of 27 science kits from three publishers, FOSS, STC, and Insights. Training included topics in life science, physical science, earth science and technology. For further information regarding Beckman Discovery Boxes, go to B@S Curriculum.

Beckman Trainers

The Beckman@Science Program maintained rigorous standards for selecting and utilizing trainers for our science kits. In order to be considered for trainer positions, teachers must (1) attend a training class, (2) have taught the desired kit in their classroom a minimum of two times, and (3) shadow an experienced trainer.
