These grants provide money to school districts for implementing a hands-on science program. The Beckman@Science K-6 Science Education Initiative awards school districts with incentive grants for materials and teacher training. School districts implementing hands-on science developed a strategic plan. A school district then submits its strategic plan for approval before the grant is awarded. Thereafter, an annual report documenting progress, district commitment and matching funds will be required and approved before the next allotment is awarded. Grant money can be used for teacher training and for purchase of science materials.
All districts with K-6 schools were invited to participate in the Beckman@Science K-6 Science Education Initiative. Selection of participating districts were based on district interest and willingness to commit district resources to improve science education. All twenty-five school districts with K-6 schools in Orange County had an opportunity to participate. Once the hands-on science program is developed, schools and districts are expected to allocate their own funds to support and sustain the ongoing needs of the program.
