During school year 2011-2012, Tarbut V’Torah Community Day School had nine
teachers and 368 students who were impacted by hands-on, inquiry-based science.
Prior to our partnership with Beckman@Science, our school supported the
hands-on inquiry based model of science, and were in the initial stages of
implementing this model. We have currently completed our eleventh year with
Beckman@Science and now have hands-on, inquiry-based learning and notebook
assessment up to three times a week in each of our Kindergarten through sixth
grade classes
.
Unquestionably, inquiry based science and notebook assessment have had a
powerfully positive effect on all of our science teachers and students. This model
of science learning endorses the problem-solving and critical thinking philosophy
that is the cornerstone of a Tarbut education. Additionally, our middle and upper
school teachers have expressed their excitement with the background knowledge
and skills that our lower school students possess in all branches of science. A
number of our high school graduates have and continue to pursue degrees in
science and step into science-related career fields.
Our board firmly endorses hands-on, inquiry-based science as evidenced by the
on-going funding support for these areas.
